As we head towards autumn, it is important that pet owners remain mindful of the risks that can come to their pets. While autumn brings with it cooler weather, it also introduces hazards that can affect your pet’s health and safety. Here’s what you need to watch out for this autumn season.
1. Toxic Plants and Mushrooms
Autumn brings with it cooler weather and increased moisture levels that cause mushrooms to thrive. Whilst some mushrooms may be good for pets, other types that grow in autumn are very toxic to them. Be sure to keep an eye out on your pet during walks and prevent them from playing with or ingesting unknown plants. If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic mushroom, a quick visit to the vet will be needful to curb any further health threats.
2. Fleas and Ticks Are Still Active
Weather patterns have changed over the years, and this means that pests that typically became inactive in autumn now remain active well into the season. A good example are fleas and ticks, which remain active well into autumn. Bushy areas and tall grasses are prime breeding grounds, so regular flea and tick prevention is essential. Check your pet’s fur frequently, especially after outdoor activities. Don’t forget to visit your vet for flea and tick treatment as well.
3. Colder Temperatures and Joint Pain
As the weather become cooler, pets—especially older dogs and cats—may experience joint stiffness and arthritis flare-ups. Providing warm bedding and limiting exposure to chilly winds can help. If your pet seems sluggish or has trouble moving, consider a vet check-up to discuss joint supplements or pain relief options.
4. Exercise
We all want to stay in and cuddle as the cooler weather sets in. However , it is important to keep up your pet’s exercise routine and ensure they remain active. Be sure they are warm when going out to prevent sickness, and for cats you can also have an indoor scratch tower so they remain active without necessarily going outdoors much. You can also have some indoor games with your pet to keep them active (be sure to have some treats for them!)
5. Easter Hazards
What’s the most significant event in Autumn? Well, that’s Easter. And with it comes the opportunity to indulge in chocolate and other sweet stuff. Needless to sat, you’ll be tempted to give a taste of it to your doggo. But that isn’t a really great decision though as chocolate is poisonous to dogs (and cats as well). Ensure your Easter Eggs, and chocolate treats are kept away from your pets .In case your pet shows signs of diarrhoea, vomiting and quick breathing, it would be good to take them to the vet as these as signs of being poisoned.
By staying aware of these autumn hazards, you can ensure your pet enjoys the season safely.
